Collection: Susan Foster

Susan Q. Foster retired in 2011 as director of UCAR's Office of Education and Outreach where she collaborated with educators and scientists at UCAR and the National Center for Atmospheric Sciences, as well as in universities, school districts, nonprofit organizations, and agencies on numerous educational program initiatives. She served from 2011 - 2014 as Project Manager for NSDL, also based at UCAR. Throughout her career she has enjoyed building bridges between science and formal as well as informal education communities that promote understanding of rocky mountain and aquatic ecosystems, atmospheric dynamics, weather, climate, and Earth system science. She has authored science curriculum modules, natural history books for children and adults, and technical articles, and co-authored the Roadside Guide to Rocky Mountain National Park with Dr. Beatrice Willard (Johnson Books). She earned a B.A. in Zoology from Connecticut College, an M.Ed. in Biology and an M.A. in Secondary Education from the University of Colorado.

Susan has always appreciated the beauty of landscapes. She enjoys interpreting, capturing, and communicating beautiful moments and places through her pastel paintings. She says that one part of her brain views them as a network of ecosystems sustained by the complex interrelationships between plants and animals and the energy, water, and nutrients that sustain them. All components must function together for the entire ecosystem to be healthy.

Just as landscapes are constantly changing, Susan also sees the process of landscape painting as a dynamic activity. Hues, values, edges, and light are interrelated in ways somewhat analogous to the parts of an ecosystem. And like an ecosystem, a painting is successful only when its compositional elements are in balance and supportive of one another.
