Hayakawa does not paint simply to be carried away by the act of painting. He is preoccupied by more transcendent concerns. As it happened, he alit a long time ago on painting as the best way to investigate such concerns. It could be said that Hayakawa came to focus on these metaphysical matters because they suited the act of painting, as well as vice versa. Certainly, in the wake of American abstract expressionism, European art informal, and Asian adaptations of and expansions on both, Hayakawa found his own voice, also inflected by the existential spirituality of the modern era. The gesture is the basic unit of expression for Hayakawa as it was for 20th century painters. In this sense he is something of a traditionalist.
